September’s featured design is the fantastic Ultimaker 2 Go portable 3D printer. I have been around a few 3D printers in recent years for study and projects and found them fascinating. 3D printers allow designers and users to rapidly print 3D prototypes of products/devices/designs from computer aided design software. This is a highly accurate and immediate way to produce 3D objects that have both simple or complex shapes. Designers can then feel, touch and sense the features of the dimensional and ergonomic properties of their designs.
The technology and research based around 3D printers has developed greatly. So much so that 3D printers that cure polymers (plastics) from a liquid pool to a fully formed object, are now available. 3D printers work by melting the plastic and extruding it out of a nozzle which moves to and fro depending on your design to be printed. The nozzle extrudes the plastic onto a heated machine bed where it is layered up to produce the designed object. Many are on the market ready for mass populations of amateur designers and consumers to buy.
These printers can print with many plastics. The material choice depends on the functionality, shape, purpose and aesthetic designs of the 3D object to be printed.
You can print a variety of objects such as toys, fixtures or components to fix current products or devices right up to prototypes. 3D printers have great versatility in many areas. Now, you can even get a portable 3D printer. This is a mini machine which can print mini objects easily.
If you are willing to invest in something with wonderful design ability and are always ‘on the move’, I would get the new, small and lightweight Ultimaker 2 Go. (It comes with an amazing bespoke rucksack).
